Cowboy Match

March 13, 2021 @ 9:00 am 1:00 pm CST

Cowboy Action Shooting is a modern shooting sport governed by the Single Action Shooting Society in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West.  Participants use single action revolvers, pistol caliber lever action rifles and side-by-side double barreled, pre -1899 pump or lever action shotguns.

One of the unique elements of cowboy action shooting is the atmosphere.  Participants dress in historical apparel from the 1840s-1890’s and take on an alias that is used at matches.  Many clubs build shooting ranges with historical facades that range from western towns to riverboats.

A typical match normally consists of six different shooting stages and lasts three to four hours.  In each stage, you shoot steel targets using pistols, rifle and a shotgun.  The round count for a match is 120 pistol and rifle rounds and 26 shotgun rounds.

Our SASS affiliated club, the Green River Gunslingers, is currently allowing limited use of .22 rimfire ammunition at local matches.  Matches are held on the second Saturday of each month with the safety meeting being held at 09:30 and the match starting at 10:00.
